Description
We have for sale a Japanese Meiji period whist counter with eight counting tabs with lovely Shibayama inlays. Shibayama is the inlay of a design into an ivory, wood or lacquer base using a variety of carved natural materials. The Shibayama on these counting tabs are made of semi-precious stones and shells depicting various insects. These inlays are colourful, quite intricate, and very well done. The lacquer finish on the wooden counter is also decorated with gold-painted flowers and a bird. The card game of Whist preceded Bridge in the late the19th century, and these counters were used to keep score.
- Most likely made around 1880-1900
- Made in Japan
- Good condition – some chipping to the lacquer, and one bug has lost its body inlay. – Please see photos.
Dimensions of wooden base:
- About 3.50 inches long
- About 2.00 inches wide
- About 0.50 inches deep
